Monmouth County Clerk Marriage License Office

The Monmouth County Clerk is the main source for marriage licenses in the county. The office is at 33 Mechanic Street in Freehold, inside the county government complex. Both people who plan to marry must go to the clerk in person. You cannot send just one person. Bring a valid form of photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. You will also need proof of your date of birth and your Social Security card.

Monmouth County has stricter ID rules than some other counties in New Jersey. The clerk may ask for more than one form of ID. If you were born outside the United States, bring your birth certificate with a certified English translation. If you changed your name in the past, bring proof of that change. It is best to call the clerk at 732-431-7324 before your visit to ask what forms and documents you need for your marriage license in Monmouth County.

What You Need for a Monmouth County Marriage License

New Jersey law requires both people to appear at the same time. You must bring valid photo ID. A driver's license or passport works. You also need your Social Security number and proof of age. If you are under 18, you need written consent from a parent or guardian, though New Jersey has raised the minimum marriage age in recent years.

If you were married before, Monmouth County requires you to bring proof that the prior marriage ended. For divorced applicants, this means a certified copy of your final divorce decree. A photocopy will not work. The decree must show the date the divorce was granted and have a court seal or stamp on it. If your prior spouse passed away, bring a certified death certificate. Monmouth County is strict about this, and the clerk will not issue your marriage license without the right proof.

Under New Jersey Title 37, both parties must sign the marriage license application in the presence of a clerk or registrar. False statements on the form can result in penalties. The clerk will review all your documents and ask a few basic questions before issuing your Monmouth County marriage license.

Note: If one partner cannot appear due to military deployment, ask the clerk about special provisions for Monmouth County marriage licenses.
